Song #17

Well thank god it's almost New Years. Lets put this one away and hope for the best, eh? I was going to write one of those ponder-it-all-here-at-the-end type of songs, but I just wasn't feeling it. I really seem to love the melancholy broken heart stuff. How can you write that stuff when you are pretty happy these days, they ask. Well, there are plenty of demons to go around.
Is anyone making resolutions? I hate those things. I finally quit smoking this year, and that's resolution enough for me. I would like to not be so damn broke all the time. But alas...

Song #16

Well, I've had this ready to post up for about a week, but after we got back from Minnesota I got so sick I spent days passing in and out of a feverish delirium, and just now am coming back to the world of the living.
It was -20 degrees in Bemidji (that's 80 degrees colder than LA!). We were there shooting a music video for my girlfriend, most of which was outside. Basically it involved one very large guitar, one town full of werewolves, and the Bemidji choir. It should be really really great! I'll post it here when it's done, but for now just a small slide show.

Song #15

So this one is a bit rough, but I had to post a day early because I am leaving today for some ice cube called Bemidji, Minnesota where I'll be freezing my ass off for four days wondering why anyone would want/choose to live in the snow. Why, you say, are you going there? I'll never tell, I reply.
But I expect them to ply me with liquor that is strong and will keep me warm.
High temperature for Bemidji today...9 degrees!
(I promise photos, and a new mix upon return.)

Some hours of melancholy gave this song.

song #14

So after all the stress of life lately I have been obsessing over my kicked cigarette habit. Oh, how lovely it would be to just open a new pack of cigarettes, brush the loose tobacco off the top of the 20 little friends I find waiting there for me, smiling almost, and pull out the first crisp white Marlboro Light. Why, I'd sit on a park bench on a brisk autumn morning, strike a match, and laugh with the carefree bliss of a school boy. But, I digress....

Song #13

Uh oh. 13 is supposed to be unlucky, isn't it? Never understood quite why that is, but as my luck is usually subpar 13 can't possibly rattle me.
Well, Happy (belated) Turkey. I hope you all drifted off into a sweet Tryptophan induced slumber like I did. I suppose it could have been the wine, too.
In honor of the Thanksgiving Holiday I got a U-turn ticket and it's $150 bucks! I put up a little album of four songs for only 2 BUCKS to help pay this beast. That's 4 songs for 2 bucks, what a bargain!

This song is about a girl who just can't ever seem to act right.

Song #12

Whew! This is the end of month three, and altho I haven't had a million page views like I had hoped, I still have met some great people and heard some very encouraging words. I must admit, when I have days of 2 page views I feel like giving up, but alas...
This weeks song came together after several strong images stuck in my mind:
1) The imprint of lipstick on the rim of a wine glass
2) Black spike heels, and the girl who wore them, and
3) the various hearts those heels impaled

Again, please consider purchasing any of the songs from the little store below. The money goes to me and my 'Feed-a-hungry-musician-who-has-a-job-but-lives-in-LA-and-so-is-

Song #11

Well, I'm not sure where this one came from. It's a little out of the norm for me, perhaps. I was thinking about building things--specifically in terms of 'building a life' or 'building a future' or 'building something from nothing'. Then I got this idea of a brick man who is sort of taking himself apart to build a wall to keep everything out--but vanishing in the process. (Don't steal that idea--its copyrighted!)
Wait! There's more...
Then I thought about the bricks as a metaphor for years, and the more you lay them down the more you are diminishing; like our little brick man, see. Then this song came out.
That's all.

God, I need to get out of the house more.

Oh, and if you still haven't seen the write up I got about the blog, go HERE

Song #10

Serious bouts of melancholy this week gave rise to this song about giving up. This song was one of those mysterious events that just kind of come thru you, because before I knew it--it was finished. Nice when that happens, isn't it? I started out intending to make it a slow morose hide-in-your-bedroom type Brian Wilson thing, but it just didn't want to go that way, and I'm happy with it.

A bit of cool news, too--the .blogspot. was dropped from the address--so now it's just www.onesongperweek.com Much better! And AND! I got a great write up by the folks at Puddlegum so go and check it out, and add them to your blogroll and to your list of people to tell other people about!

Song #9

This is for the almost's in my life. You were only almost for a reason. You know the reason(s).
But in case you forgot:
1) For being evil
2)For being heartless (except to animals...so, at least they'll love you)
3)Because breaking into my house thru the kitchen window while I'm sleeping is just creepy.
4)Because I finally caught you

song #8

Wow. I nearly went completely mental writing this song. I had about 10 different versions and think I lost a good bit of hair and sleep in the process, but, it's done! and I like it.
This is the close of the second month of One Song Per Week, and I really appreciate all of you who come back week after week to listen to this stuff. I especially want to thank the folks that have bought tracks off the site (not quite able to quit my job yet, but I was this close to being able to buy a bottle of wine last month).
Also, The Second Month album should be up soon, and you can get those four songs for just $2.99 (sorry, I'm not Radiohead, I can't give 'em away...yet).

Song #7

(I know song #8 should be up, but I'm having some technical problems. It will be up tonight at some point. 10/18/07)

Figured it was time for a change of pace. 3 break-up songs in a row. Sheesh! It's amazing I could even get any work done this week considering the fact that I'm totally geeking out on Harry Potter right now (I'm on book #5)

Speaking of...

Song #6

Whoa! Song #5 sure took a beating in the polls. Note to self: don't write anymore songs like that one! Seriously though, I appreciate everyones honesty.
This weeks song came about in a very strange way. I had a dream I was walking down a street and I heard someone singing. Upon closer inspection, I saw that it was Bill Cosby, and he was sitting on the steps of an old brownstone singing this song. I woke up and realized it was definitely not Bill Cosby's song, or anyone elses song for that matter, so I wrote it down. This is the first song that has ever come to me in a dream. I wish they were all like that--so much easier.

You know that point in a break up where you are just exhausted and can't take anymore shit emotionally--usually that comes right before the stage where you're just f***ing angry and realize they weren't any good anyway--yeah, this is that song.

Song #6 is called Cry

Song #5

For this song I employed the help of some live drums, the sequenced ones just weren't cutting it. I hauled all my gear to a bigger sort of closet, and we did two takes and called it good. I'd never recorded live drums before, and I didn't like doing it.

I swear, this song perfectly describes the girl. Lucky for me, she's onto some other poor soul. Aaahh...hindsight.
This won't be the last song on this subject, trust me.

Always best when heard thru headphones.

Song #4

Woo Hoo! This marks the first month of the One Song Per Week effort! To celebrate, I made an album in the Snocap store called 'The First Month' and you can get all 4 songs for just $2.99! That means you save...like...loads of money! Now, back to our regularly scheduled blog...

This song is based on the Persian myth of Laili and Majnun (think Romeo and Juliet, but way way earlier) and brought into the scope of things going on in my life.
A friend of mine gave to me a poem that he scribbled down from memory after we had been discussing luck and love and heartache. It was by Rumi, and it goes:
'Come come whoever you are
wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving
ours in not a caravan of despair
even if you have broken your vows a thousand times
come, come yet again,
come...'

Song #3

Ever had a song that defined you at some time period in your life? Well, at one point for me it was the Talking Heads 'Memories Can't Wait.'
For Song #3, I was thinking alot about drugs. I wanted to write about the way it feels when it all starts getting out of control, and the unravelling really sets in. I had a tough time with the harmonies (some of them are friggin' high), but I think they finally came out ok. I really like the way it sounds in the headphones.

Song #3 is called My Last High

Song #2

I sat on the opening line of this song for a long time before it finally took shape. It started out as just a piano song, but soon decided it wanted to be a bit more rock and roll. I had the idea realization that a certain someone I used to know was just making people miserable as a way of settling an old score. All teeth and claws, she was.
This is also the 'radio edit' because the original has a very prominent 'f**k' in it. But i figured best to err on the side of caution here in the beginning.

Song #2 is called: Black Heart.

If you knew her, you would agree.

Intro & Song #1

The premise is simple: One musician, one song per week. I write them. I record them. I post them up here for you to listen to. Love it or hate it, feel free to leave me a comment. If commenting is not your thing, there is a poll on the left. Or just do nothing. It's ok.

This first song was just finished last night. Its called The Easy Way Out. When I sat down to write it, I had just gone through a semi-severe obsession with The Left Banke song Walk Away Renee. I love that song for it's simplicity, yet it's imagery is so perfectly haunting.
The chorus for this song came as I was waiting in line for a coffee. It just popped in my head, melody and all. It seemed really universal. I scribbled it on a napkin so that I wouldn't forget it, and then stayed inside on a perfectly sunny day to work it out.
